Shirley that one is a nice one to have. We have several of those mixed in with the blue irises.

Thanks Terry & Astrid. This Columbine is right next to my house, is in constant shade and gets watered frequently. The Columbine in my yard get pt. sun. I try to keep them well watered, but their soil may dry out a bit.

What a beauty Shirley. The fact that your post said, "grown from seed" caught my eye because last year I grew Aquilegia from seed and this year the blossoms are close to opening--I have about 10 plants at least.

How did you plant the seeds? Did you chill them first? When did you plant them? i have some that I want to plant now. I have them in the refrigerator. How long do I have to leave them in there? Thanks Helen

Thanks so much Denise! Aquilegia are very easy to grow from seed, but one does need patience as they do not bloom until the 2nd year. Then they drop their seeds and the whole process begins again. Nele: I 'wintersow' all my seeds. Usually, I put them outside in either December or January (hardy perennials) in a plastic 1 gallon milk container. Do you know about the theory behind wintersowing? MotherNature takes care of the seeds and provides the moisture needed. The seeds go through periods of freezing & thawing (stratification) through out the Winter, which breaks open their seed coats. This allows them to germinate and by Springtime you too will have lots of Aquilegia sprouts. I would refer to http://www.wintersown.org for lots more information, pictures, fun quizes, and frequently asked questions. We'll be here if you need more help or just some moral support.

Terrific that you're familiar with Wintersowing because you'll be able to grow all your Columbine from seed in every color of the rainbow! Happy growing!

I got some seed from several sources this past winter and planted them right away and they grew very well. Shirley - What was the source of the seedling in your garden? Clayton
