I have lots of established plants, four varieties as far as I can tell, that spread a little bit each year. If a container is large enough, can it be potted and survive my zone's winter? I have a shady outside corridor that I am trying to line with appropriate plants. Thanks for your help.

I put some in a plastic window box container this year. They should be fine I would think. Worth a shot to see. I had left them in just a cardboard box with some dirt , under a tree . for 7 months when I first moved to the farm, through the entire Winter, They were just fine.

I agree with Mimi and go for it! We have one in a container we just shove up close to the house.

Aquilegias are far hardier than they look though cold conditions can lead to plants in the long term being shorter lived than in milder places. I can remember a few winters ago I found a tray of yearlings in individual cells. All were completely waterlogged and also quite frozen solid. All made it to flower the following summer.

Or Charles you can divide them as we just learned when I sent Terry a couple pieces of the one we had.

I'm not in your zone but I did overwinter one in a pot this year and it did great.
