Not sure if I should put this here or in the bulb forum? Anyway, I'm tickled pink because one of the three amaryllis bulbs I set out over the summer and then repotted up at Thanksgiving gave me a bloom stalk and the flower opened today. I've been watching it open over the last 4 days.
This is the second year I've had one rebloom but I didn't mark which one bloomed last year so I don't know if it's the same one or not. I'm going to mark it this time so I'll be able to tell next year.

Amaryllis are a bit of a passion of mine, I'm waiting eagerly for my 2008 season to start. They are such fascinating flowers, and it's such fun to see them change from day to day.

They are fast growers that's for sure. I swear if you stood still long enough you could see them growing. I used to just buy them for the holidays and then toss them out after the leaves died never thinking I could get them to rebloom. One year I put them in a brown paper bag but some how never tossed them. I found them the following year and just for the heck of it potted it up. Lo and behold it started to grow and bloomed for Easter! Now I just keep them from year to year. Saves a lot of money on new ones.

Hi Sharon, that is great! This is the first year I planted Amarylliss. Bought the kit, and it did just fine. After it bloomed, I cut the stalk off (per directions) and keeping the plant in pot on my windowsill watering regularly until spring. I would prefer to have it potted and enjoy every year. Suggestions? Should I dig up bulb now or when, then store bulb til Nov and repot?

Hi Stephanie, thanks. I cut the flower stem off too when it's done blooming. Continue to water it until spring and then I put it outside for the summer. Feed and water it with the rest of your garden and around the end of August bring it in, cut any leaves on it off and unpot the bulb. Put the bulb in a brown paper bag and store it in a cool dark place for around 8 weeks. Then repot it and start all over again. It doesn't always rebloom but it's worth a shot. Give it a try.

i have done the same up here, my problem is in augest i have to keep a eye on them and dig them up before they start to bloom they dont need cold and dark to get a bloom. as meny gb's i love to watch them grow and bloom. any recomendation on feeding i have read lots of different things and i wonder what the big growers do. i plant them all in one big pot that makes it easyer to take care of with watering and sutch come mid may out they go for the summer.

Hi Sharon, thanks for the info! I'm wondering since you are in zone 6 and I in zone 9a, there may be a difference in storing in Nov. rather than Aug? I will definitely give this a try!

I just use my regular garden fertilizer on mine and usually that's what ever was on sale the week I needed to buy some. I've used Miracle Grow, Peters, Bayer. Same stuff I put on my roses. I don't know about timing, Stephanie. I do mine in August in the hope that I can get it to bloom for the holidays. As you can see that doesn't always work. This one took from Thanksgiving until now to bloom but I've had some that I planted in November that bloomed out before Christmas too.
