Hi all,
Didn't know where to put this as we do not have a hydrangea forum, too bad. Since I do plan to grow it inside, for a while, thought I would list it here.

I happened on this really cool plant the other day, Shooting Star Hydrangea, fell in love with it so I wanted to share it with you for the holiday!

Did a little research on it, relatively new plant. Can anyone provide tips etc?

Take a look! It really does look like dangling "shooting stars".

So pretty. I read something on this one, but can't remember where. Maybe it was offered for sale recently by Wayside garden or Park Seed?

Have a look at this site. To my knowledge, all the macrophylla cultivars would be hardy in your climate.

Thanks Terryk & Patty.

Carol, thanks for the live link!

Hi Donna,
Thanks.

I'd like to share what I discovered after I removed the foil. Very interesting and clever. I removed the foil, then watered plant. I noticed the water was not draining. A closer look revealed the potted plant was sitting inside another pot. I noticed water inside of foil. What this great nursery did was sit the potted plant inside another pot with a thick wick housed in smaller pot leading to larger pot. The larger pot housed bottom water and the plant received water thru wick as it needed it. Very clever.

Here's my latest pic of shooting star hydrangea. Hope it does well in the window.

My husband bought me the same plant for Christmas! I love it. I'm scared though because I'm in zone 5 and I'm not sure if the winterizing will be enough for me. I also have not had much luck with hydrangeas.... so HELP!!!!

Purplethumb, love your name! We will need to "compare notes" on this one. I'm sure you have it inside on a windowsill or maybe under a grow light? Did you remove the foil and notice the neat irrigation system on it? I pulled all off and placed the plant on my kitchen sill with saucer. Mine is in a 4 inch pot. Can you believe that? It is extremely rootbound. :( :) Let us know how yours does.

Loretta, let us know when you get yours so we can chat about this beautiful plant.

Hang in there Purplethumb! Others with this plant? Comments?

Hi there - I just bought one of these this Christmas too. I fell in love with it too -- I just ran into this post as I was searching for info, trying to figure out how to get it into my garden. Its wintertime here -- I live in zone 6/6b. She's a beauty!

Hey Dori,Plant Forum
Thanks! Yes, do keep an eye on this thread. I'll keep it going. Now we have two other garden friends with this plant. This should be interesting!

Sarah, oh great! Did you unwrap the foil and notice the cool irrigation system?

Gee, I would love to have this plant too. So has it been determined whether this plant will grow outside in the summer?

Hi,

Just picked up on this thread...

From earlier information from Carol, this plant is a Hydrangea macrophylla, named "Hanabi".
In the UK it is sold under the name of "Fireworks". Apparently Hanabi means Fireworks once translated from Japanese...but I must admit I have not done the translation myself...
It was discvovered around 1960 and named by Mr. Takeomi Yakamoto.

I have grown it outside for around 3 years in a zone 8 area in the UK where it grows well and flowering, but not flowering as good as other macrophyllas. One thing it does do is branch out well. There are also pink ( Fireworks ) and blue ( Fireworks ) versions sold in the UK...

I have taken cuttings of Hanabi which have been planted out in zone 7 and they have actually flowered better.

I think if planted out I would make sure I took cuttings just in case, but from my experience in zones 7 and 8 at least, it does as good as any other macrophylla in my garden.

Roy,
Thanks for the added info! Are yours potted and outside or grown in your garden?
I'm limited for garden space so mine will need to be repotted and put outside in the spring.

BTW-My white shooting star has hues of light blue. They can also be pink hues on white depending on the acidity of the soil it is in.
I read that the white blooms will stay for quite a while (4 to 6 weeks) then the bloom will fade to a green hue for the same amount of time. I'll keep yall posted!

Other's with this great plant, please join in on this thread, or if you have a comment as well!

Stephanie,

My "Fireworks" is planted in the garden without any major problems.
When it has flowered mine has taken on a slight pink hue.
The leaf buds are just plumping up at the moment.

Like you, I do hope this thread continues...this is a fascinating plant.
