These are some fast growing plants. I re-potted this plant 5-25-04 and now it's is so large that I am afraid that it will break the hanging basket. They like to be crowed before they will bloom so I won't re-pot until next spring. The first photo is how it looked when I re-potted, the second photo is how it looks now.

What a cool plant!!! Does it want sun outside or will it take shade? Do you know its name?

It likes shade and it's a hoya and also called Hindu Rope plant/Compacta. You wouldn't believe how beautiful the blooms are, they don't look real but more like blown glass.

Wemons, what a beautiful Hoya! I have a new small one and can't wait until it grows up like yours. Do you have many hoyas? Would you mind stopping in the garden photos forum and take a look at Carolyn's photo of her hoya and help give advice to her. Thanks!

I just started a hoya collection this summer but I have always love the Compacta. I sure will but it would make it easier if you would post a link here.

It's unfortunate that I cut off the spent blooms not knowing that if I did it wouldn't bloom again. Maybe that's why it is growing so fast, but I hope that the new growth will flower for me. I do have a red, green and white variegated one that I hope it will bloom for me this summer.

Kit, this is one plant I've really admired over the years. I have had two of the variegateds. They do bloom nicely outside. They did well outside the way you have them but didn't really like the dryness of the air inside and eventually went to Hoya heaven. :-( Yours sure look great!

Mine doesn't seem to mind being indoors. I have read a lot about them and some say that they like to dry out between watering when indoors. Well it hard to water this one with four cats just waiting to swat it. I do put it in the bath tub, making sure that I don't break it and then water it to the point of run off. Once it has drained I hang it back up and boy is it heavy. So you can imagine it doesn't get this treatment too often.

Here's a photo of my 7 foot rope plant. Does anyone have any info or experience on rooting this plant from cuttings? Thanx.

No but it very much reminds me of a hoya - especially the flower. Why dont you go out and get some rooting hormone and cut a piece off and dip it in the rooting hormone and plant it and see what happens - I bet you will get it to root that way? Let us know how it goes. Golden

Oops Im sorry - I didnt really read the above posts (about it being in the hoya family) sorry about that - So if it is - I know my mother has hoyas and she has started them by rooting hormone and she has also started them in a glass of water. Just make sure when you take your cutting you take off the greenery you are sticking in the soil. Sounds obvious but some people wouldnt know that. Golden

About 9 years ago, I received a cutting from my mom's indoor dish garden rope hoya. I also planted it indoors. Mine took about 5 years to grow about one foot. I transplanted it to a larger pot and it really seems to be doing better. However, my plant has never bloomed. My mom's blooms every year. I'd love some suggestions. Thanks!

Many times, hoyas like to be a bit more rootbound to bloom.....I have had peduncles dormant on the compacta for a couple years before they even decide to plump up and bloom......also, with the curly leaves, you may miss that there is peduncles on the vines...Have you tried any bloom fertilizer? Especially at this time of year when its putting out new growth...hope it blooms for you soon :) Sandy

I just discovered these plants on a website I was checkingout. They are neat, but I do not have a clue about them as far as propagating, and growing. So thanks to you who have all contributed. I think I will buy this plant.
