A friend who's family runs a very good nursery here told me a trick to get the christmas cactus to be in bloom for the holidays. She said to hold off watering for the month of September and then resume in October with fertilizer and it will bloom for the Christmas holiday. They do this with all their plants. You may already know this tip, but just in case you don't I thought I would pass it on.

Just to update, I have one bud clearly visible, some others maybe on the way. Maybe this trick works-Ej do you have any new buds?

All you have to do to get them to bloom is leave them outside in the fall for a while. They need coolness and darkness to set buds. I leave mine out under a roofed back patio every year and they set buds easily. Tom

Welcome to gardenbuddies Tom. I did not put mine out but may have to try this next year. I am just happy to get blossoms.

Here in the southern hemisphere the zygocactus need a short day to flower. As Tommyr provides by putting his plant out on an unlit roofed patio. In the commercial nursery that my wife used to work at they supplied at least a 12 hour night, possibly more.

Here is a yellow/peachy one that opened up. My camera is not doing justice to the color. :) Donna

Such a delicate one, Donna :) I just put all of mine out for the summer in shade/semi sun. They all bloom once in the summer months, then I bring them in for fall and they bloom again for Christmas or shortly after :) Patricia

I have a very old cacti and I usually just keep it away from artificial light and in a cool (north) room sometime in september and forget about it. I like mine to bloom for Easter so around New Years I'll bring it out. My baby looks just a bout dead, but I'll put it in an east window, water and light fertilizing and I seldom miss Easter dinner with a great table center piece. Also remember to keep your cacti root bound. My aunt repotted her's 6 years ago and has yet to rebloom.

Well let see, the colors I think I still have are red, red/orange, pink, salmon, white, and I have forgotten the color of the one my Father had( that belonged to his Mother) When she passed away, he took the HUGE one she had for years, pinched off pieces (for rooting) Then started go give them away :) Before I had to bring him home, he just could not remember to water and feed them, or anything! By the time we got to his place, all the rooted pieces were all dried out and no one knows where the original cacti was :(

A friend gave me a tiny cutting in early October. Today it has one bloom and one bud. My larger plants have nothing at all....

Hi Guys: Im New to the forum. I love to grow plants indoors. I want to increase my collection , because right now my little greenhouse is almost empty. I was wondering if I could get some Christmas/ Thanksgiving/Easter Cactus Cuttings from whoever is willing. I have some Rainforest tree seeds to trade. Or I can SASE.

I have a White Christmas Cactus if you need a cutting. What I could do is take the cutting and root it for you, if you are interested. (This is it)

Geen, Blue Rose, I would send you a cutting of something if you wanted to root me a Christmas Cactus. I have many plants that are not listed on my trade list right now, and I could send you a rooted clematis if you are interested in that. I can also list my indoor plants I have so far as well.

I don't know what I'm doing to mine....other than slight neglect, but one year it bloomed 4 times! Other years it blooms only twice, but sometimes 3
