This is a turn-off from Banff, Alberta to Highway #1 to Calgary. They had to build the animals (especially the elk) their own crossing because this is where the natural crossing was. It didn't take the animals long to learn this was their 'road'.
On our Island highway, between Qualicum Beach and Courtenay we have fencing that protects the elk from coming onto the highway as well, and they have their own crossing.

Simply awesome! For DH and I, this is some of the most amazing country we've ever traveled. Around every bend is scenery more beautiful than the last and wildlife is so abundant! The thrill of a lifetime was seeing a young but large grizzly bear crossing the road. Elk were everywhere where we stayed. It was so much fun we've done it twice now. Everything from hummingbirds to grizzly bears. Thanks for sharing Diane.

LOL! I think it's a great idea, I remember when visiting Banff, they also had some more natural looking crossings as well. I think it's a wonderful idea, we humans don't realize how we affect animals migration when we build roads.

Such a fantastically bizarre image Diane. Hard to believe it is for real. How wonderful to have done that for the animals. Nice to see people do care about them sometimes.

What a great way for the elk to get across. Kathy
