Although abundant lots of the larger animals proved elusive. When one was spotted total chaos happened on the road.Okay if you were at the front, not much fun if half a mile back. The Rangers have a difficult job handled with patience.Wonder what the animals make of the human behaviour. Buffalo grand Tetons, there were lots everywhere

What wonderful pics, Tony! The memories are priceless, for sure. It's funny, living in Michigan, we do have bears in the northern part and the Upper Peninsula but I had never seen a black bear (wild) until we visited the Canadian Rockies where we saw not just a black bear, but a grizzly as well! I still have never seen a bull moose.. the cow, yes. :\

I am guessing your butterfly is some type of admiral butterfly. Great shots of all the wonderful animals you saw! Did you know that the cow moose with young is more dangerous than a bull moose! OK I think I found your butterfly Weidemeyer's Admiral http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?allSpecies=&searchText=admiral&GroupID=&curGroupID=2&lgfromWhere=&curPageNum=2

Thank you for the id.We saw several other wonderful butterflies but I really need them to be glued to a rock to manage a picture. We saw lots of signs about the dangers of getting to close to the animals but fortunatly there were always lots of more stupid people than us closer to them who would have been there first choice to trample.

Great pics that bring back memories. Deb and I spent the 2001 and 2002 work season rebuilding the highway through Grand Teton Park.
The rangers really don't mind folks getting out of vehicles. The rangers get the pick of tourists' cameras that get dropped when the critters turn on them. You should see the equipment they have :) I'm not jumping on you. I do it too even after watching a bison demolish a van. I wish I could find a tourist that took some photos. I was running a small walk-beside trencher installing silt fence along the Snake when a tourist stopped and began snapping pics. 1st thought, "oh no, an environazi going to complain". I looked around to make sure everything was ok..... there was a huge bison bull 4 to 5 feet away looking at me. That is what the tourist was taking pics of. Me? I idled the machine down and walked to the other side of it. I must have become uninteresting because he just wandered away. Amazing animals, watching them walk up to a 6 foot fence and jump it without taking a run always made me just shake my head. Rangers (and I) would rather deal with a bear than an angry bison... or moose for that matter.

Beautiful photos, Tony! Did you stay in Jackson Hole? Back in my 'single days' I drove from Milwaukee to Salt Lake City via Yellowstone and the Tetons. Long drive but beautiful scenery. I saw lots of Elk at that time. Good story, Dave.

hi Susan yes we stayed first at Jackson Hole then went to a ranch in the wilds near Cody.It was funny because the web site showed wonderful chalets set in the wilderness and talked about moose on the lawn outside. The reality was a few huts almost touching each other along a gravel drive but a great area. On the third morning they had run out of food. I can say truthfully we really enjoyed it they were lovely people just not good at catering. We then moved back to Jackson for the last few days. It was a great holiday in superb scenery.

Great pics Tony I was lucky enough to see some bear and bull moose in North America last year and eat some bison pity about all the traffic I like to get away from that if I can.

Is The Admiral what I have here? At first I thought it was the Swallowtail, then realized it was different with only the same colors.
