I was trying to identify this critter in Pests and Diseases Forum but with no luck. I will try to repost here if you don't mind. This critter is driving me crazy!
Do you happen to know the name of this bug? It has been making my gardening life miserable for decades and still I can not find out what bug is it. The scores of it come unexpectedly, usually after the rain and munch on Dianthus, Soapwort and now even on Impatiens. The only means of destroying seems squashing! It is immune to anything else I have tried. In size it is may be slightly bigger (or not) than the ladybug. Any ideas?

beetles are frightening there are so many of them... i think this is something in the family Chrysomelidae... i do not know if i can do any better than that at the moment. i will see what i can find, however, i am terrible with beetles. bugguide might help, but it is just for nearctic arthropods, there are some amazing beetle folk on there that might know what you would find in japan though. it is a nice picture...

Thank you Tanya and Edward. I am reluctant to post on Bugguide.net since they specify " images from the US or Canada" only. I Googled Cgrysomelidae and boy, chill after chill! No, I am not fond of bugs! I am surprised that people around me that I have asked could not tell me anything about the critter. Japanese (older generation) are generally very good in naming their flora and fauna. I will keep asking. Thanks for your help!

you can still post on bugguide, they will just "frass" it and it will disappear after a month... however, in that time, you may find out what it is and how to keep it under control. while most people there are just familiar with nearctic insects, there are a few folks like Mr. Boris Bueche with a fondness for beetles and a great knowledge of palearctic fauna. there have been people from all over the world who have added pictures... the pictures just do not stay on the site long. good luck keeping it off the plants.

well, i am not sure Mals picture is of a Meloid... the pronotum does not appear to be narrower than the head. however, i can say the link is a Nemognatha species. i am not good at identifying beetles.

DW, at first sight they do look like twins...just in different color (and shape of eyes?). I found a picture from last year. Other than Impatiens (last on their delicacy list?) I try not to grow ANYTHING what could be on this critters menu. I figured out that was the only way of controlling the swarms of it.
Thanks DW and Ed!
