Kent is known as the "Garden of England" and is also where my sister lives. Each year we go up after harvest time and legally scrump the orchards behind her house. Here are a few pictures. I would have taken more but it started to rain. In the distance is a line of poplar trees. Obvious which way the prevailing wind blows.
Crab apples are planted in between the rows of ordinary apples presumably for pollination.
We ended up with a rucksack and three bags full of apples, one of pears and one of crab apples. The neighbours are now very happy as I distribute them every year.

Lovely pics, Moira. What a nice thing to do... You and your sister get to have fun day together, the orchard owners get to see their overabundance go to good use, and folks are very happy to receive it as well. Neato!

Thanks Tanya. We couldn't possibly eat all that we collect but to leave any there that we could possibly carry seems such a waste. As it is I make jam, jelly (if I can remember where I put the jelly bag) apple pie, apple crumble, pear tarts and freeze some. Still more than enough left to keep us going for a month at least even with the ones I give away.

And imagine Moira, the cheapest apple here (one!) costs about a dollar - dollar fifty! :( Your photos bring back memories... ..and that characteristic wonderful smell of cold, damp soil, fallen leaves.... Thank you!

Sorry Ann and Malgorzata I completely missed your posts.
Thanks. Do you have any orchards near you Ann? Whereabouts are you up North?
Oh dear. Sounds like a bit of a luxury in Japan. Do they not grow any there? Glad I brought back some nice memories for you Malgorzata even if I can't send you a freshly picked apple. Btw did the rest of your family like the muffins? I have just finished and frozen the last batch of about 70!

Hi I live near Newcastle so it's very urban around me. I have a neighbour with an apple tree and have been watching the blackbirds pecking at the apples for a few weeks now - they love them. The tree is bare of leaves and is just covered in these yellow apples.

Hi Moira! Oh, they do seem to grow apples here ...however I have never seen an apple tree full of apples like in Europe. Most fruit here (any kind) are covered in special paper bags for protection (I guess form bugs and elements). What reaches the customers is picture perfect and forbiddingly expensive. But what one can do ...I still do buy apples just don't indulge in preserves. The muffins were a big success (Thanks again Moira for the metrics!) and I will be making them again and again. :) I know it is not the place but I would love to know how you make your herb vinegar and oils. Yes, I lurked into your Journal

Ooh go scrumping Ann. Crab apple jelly is delicious.
Go lurking again next time I add to my journal. I will post on there how I made them.

LOL! We had permission, honest!
Oooh plant the white flowering one. I forget what it is called but when I worked at the nursery we had one and the blossom was incredible. More beautiful than a white prunus and had yellow crabs I think.

Someone suggested I plant the redbud crabapple aka Zumi. They said the birds make a bee line for it? Oh...do I need 2 trees to get fruits on the crabapple?

I am pretty sure with crabapples you only need the one but they do fruit better if you have more than one. I have not heard of the variety you mention but there are an awful lot so not surprising. I found this link to show you the one I mentioned that is white (molten lava)but it gives you a whole load of other info too. Hope it is of use!http://www.treehelp.com/trees/crabapple/index.asp
