Hi, about 2 yrs ago I made the small trellis shown in the picture and for 2 years I grew sugar snap peas and string beans on it. The year prior to my trellis I grew these sugar snap peas that grew up to 5 feet high, so this is where the trellis idea came into play. However the following years my peas didn't grow more than 2 feet high and it seemed to be a waste of use. (I may have had hybrid seeds the first year)
I have since grown weary of peas, lol. Can I grow something else, something unique, such as yellow or acorn squash on this trellis? I would think elevating the fruit above the ground would avoid rot issues. I haven't come across anything similar and things grow very well here. Thanks

You might try cucumbers. We used to grow them on an angled frame that my husband built. We grew smaller vegetables that needed some shade below the cucumber frame, where they got morning sun and afternoon shade.

One of 3 things could have happened to your peas, (1) You planted too late(they hate heat), (2) - You replanted in same spot and they depleted the soil of nutrients (they like a lot of compost/rich soil) or (3) you bought the dwarf variety by accident. There are varieties that only grow 2 feet tall and are more of a bush variety.
However you can use your trellis to grow any vine plants such as squash, cucumbers , or my personal favorites... pole beans. The pole beans are a sweeter tasting green bean then the bush varieties hands down but most folks hate the rapid and out of control growth you get with them and grow the bush beans. Should you decide to try a pole bean I would only put one, "maybe 2" pole bean plants on each leg of your trellis as they get quite large ! You wont be able to find the wood at the end of the season...LOL I cant wait for fresh veggies ! |

Small melons like 'Minnesota Midget' can be grown on a trellis too.
I also grow Malabar Spinach (Basella rubra) up a trellis. |

I grow my cukes up a big tomato cage so I would think your trellis would work great.
Here's a picture of the pea pots my brother put together for me last year after we saw something similar at a garden center for $99.00! Yikes! ![]() These worked really great! |
